The Configuration tab of the BW/4HANA Cockpit has a combination of administrator transaction, standard transaction, and BW search options. In this blog, there is a brief explanation on each of the title under the Configuration tab.
BW Background management, logs, and tools
BW background management, logs and tools provide various functions and reports to improve performance and manage the background jobs in the system. In SAP Logon it is done using the t-code an RSBATCH.
In the background and parallel processes tab we have 3 sections, let us take a look at each slide.
Section1: Display Background Jobs
In this section, we have 2 buttons:
1. List of background management jobs– This provides us with information about the number of management jobs running in the system along with its status, runtime, start time and end time.
2. Display All background jobs – This provides us with information about the number of background jobs running in a time interval. You can filter based on server selection and work process for in-depth analysis of load over each server.
Section 2: Settings for parallel processing

Parallel processing allows us to process BW load along with the administrative process in parallel. This is done to reduce the load on the systems and achieve maximum optimization. Below are the steps to create a parallel process.
Step1: Select the administrative process in which you want to attach your BW load process and click on the parameter setting.
Step 2: Select the process variant and mention the server and then click on save and transport.
The mass maintenance of all setting for parallel processing button helps us to view all the BW load process attached to the administrative process and you can choose to delete the process that is no longer needed.
The deletion selections button enables us to delete the message that is created by the background jobs daily. This deletion prevents the overflowing of the RSBATCHDATA table.
You can also choose the frequency of the deletion and you can schedule a job for it.
Sometimes the background jobs are run manually by the user. In that case, a pop up appears asking for the server selection, host and server group. You can restrict this pop up by switching off ‘F4/ help’ for server/host/group for certain users.
You can enter the list of usernames in the below window for whom, the popup will be disabled.
To enable the popup for certain users, you can mention their usernames in the below window.
Section 3: Write stored messages to the app log
The AppLog Writer planned button help us to view the status of the job that is scheduled and to delete a job that is being run for a long time or which is no longer needed.
You can also create a job by clicking on the plan job button and choose to either run the jobs immediately or on regular time intervals. You must specify the start date, time, frequency of the jobs and you can also mention the dependent jobs as well.
The support tool tab is mainly for error logs. It collects the error logs captured in the t-codes an ST22, SM21, SLG1, SM37, SM50.
The search logs in the BW button helps us to view all the errors that have occurred in the system. The ‘Debug Selections’ button helps to debug the error process in BW background management and you can execute it using ‘Execute debugging’ button.
Bucket definition
A bucket is a precalculated value set that is stored in a database table and can be used as a filter in an analytic query. In SAP logon, the bucket definition is done using the tcode an RSBUCKET. Below are steps to create a bucket definition in BW/4HANA Cockpit.
Step 1: Enter the name of the characteristic info object that you want to restrict.
Step 2: Enter the name of the bucket and give a suitable description.
Step 3: If you want to use the existing source, select “Use existing source”.
Step 4: If the ‘Existing source‘ option is selected, an existing table or index tab in enabled.
We need to mention the reference table for the characteristic object and choose whether the table contains SID or key values and specify the reference field as well.
Step 5: if the ‘Existing source’ option is not selected, we can directly mention the values for the characteristic info object and click on save.
The created bucket definition can be used in query while creating characteristic variables as precalculated variables.
Currency translation types
Currency translation is used to convert the key figure with different currency value to the standard currency format in the target system. In SAP logon currency translation is created using the T-Code an RSCUR.
Below are the steps to create currency translation in BW/4HANA Cockpit:
Step1: Enter the technical name and click on ‘Create’.
Step 2: Enter a suitable description. In the properties tab you will be able to see details such as date of creation, Created by, Last changed by and the last changed date/time etc.
Step 3: In the ‘Exchange Rate’ tab, we can select the exchange rate type or variable to determine the exchange rate dynamically. You can choose either ‘Dynamic Ex. Rate Determination’ or mention an info object to determine the exchange rate. You can also check on the inverse exchange rate button to restore the original value of the currency.
Step 4: In the currency tab, you can choose to provide the source currency either from the data record or fixed currency or you can derive them from an info object or from the variable.
For the target currency, you can specify a fixed currency or derive them from a variable or from an info object or you can choose target currency selection with translation in which we need to specify a fixed currency or a variable in query designer.
Step 5: In the Time ref. tab, for fixed time reference you can choose either current date or mention a key date or enter a time reference variable or choose to use key date from the query that is mentioned in query properties.
For the variable time reference, you can mention the time of translation like to exact date or start/end of month/year/week/Quarter. You can choose between using a standard info object or special info object to determine the time of translation. You can also mention the time shift to increase or decrease time adjustment or mention a time shift variable.
Step 6: Save the conversion type.
Quantity conversion types
Quantity conversion is used to convert different types of unit of measure from the source system to a uniform unit of measure in the target system. In SAP Logon the quantity transaction is done using T-Code à RSUOM.
Below are steps to create quantity conversion type in BW/4HANA Cockpit.
Step 1: Enter the technical name and click on create.
Step 2: Enter the suitable descriptions for the conversion type.
You will find 3 tabs under the conversion type:
- Hdr data.
- Conversion factors.
- Unit of measure.
In the Header tab, you will find the details such as Created By, Date of Creation, Last Changed By and Last Changed Date/Time.
Step 3: In the conversion factor section you can choose either dynamic determination or conversion factor from an info object and specify the info object that your conversion type should follow. You also check on the checkbox if you want to allow unconverted values in the transformation and for planning.
You can determine the conversion factor dynamically, using the below-listed options.
Step 4: Specify the source/target UOM either directly from a data record or using a fixed unit of measure or you can derive them from an info object or variable.
Step 5: Save the conversion type.
